Re: In Istanbul, fear of a giant earthquake
Documentary by Oktay Gökakin and Eberhard Rühle - 31 min - 2024
The Gökakin family live in a dilapidated building, and Nevcivan, the mother, is so distressed she can't sleep. Oktay Gökakın, her husband, manages to convince their neighbors to demolish their building and rebuild it. The company in charge of the work will erect, at its own expense, two new buildings complying with earthquake-resistant standards, and will own one of them. A common type of contract in the region. But urban renewal has many losers, as only the most affluent can stay. The price of these buildings is much higher than before, and this inevitably drives up the cost of rent, so much so that tenants end up being forced to leave their neighborhoods.
