A team of ornithologists from the Polish League for Bird Protection is planning to reintroduce dozens of highly endangered passerines to the reed beds of the village of Rozwarowo in northwest Poland, just a stone's throw from the Baltic Sea.

For almost a month, Krzysztof Kałużny and his colleagues are on hand to watch over the chicks. They catch insects and feed their protégés every half-hour - from sunrise to sunset. After growing up in cages, the birds, born in Eastern Poland, are kept in aviaries set up in the middle of Alfred Smolczynski's reed beds. Only then will they finally be released back into the wild.

The local population is delighted at the return of the phragmites. The project is actively supported by Magda Saletra, an environmental activist who initiated a local initiative. Magda has been working for greater biodiversity for many years. She has created permaculture gardens and planted Poland's first micro-forest with the help of numerous volunteers. The bird conservationists will be showcasing their work at a barn party. This will be an opportunity to raise local awareness of the importance of reintroducing captive-bred birds into the wild.
